Independent Technical Reviews

Independent Technical Review of Chandler by Quintessa (UK)

An independent international technical review of Chandler by Quintessa (UK) studied the potential for groundwater contamination via waste leakage.

  • Calculations were undertaken for periods up to one million years
  • Study concluded that the contamination of groundwater arising from waste storage in the underground repository is unlikely to pose a groundwater contamination risk given the natural impermeability of the halite resource
  • A quantified operational and post closure risk assessment has been undertaken (Quntessa 2016)
  • The report concluded that there were no plausible risks to the overlying groundwater resource due to the impermeability of the halite resource

Independent Technical Review of Chandler by international, national and local experts

Multiple independent international, national and local technical reviews of the Chandler project were undertaken by:

  • International salt experts like Ercosplan and KU Tech from Germany
  • National mining and subject matter experts from Australia like Douglas Partners, Clough and GHD
  • National and local ground and surface water experts like Ride Consulting, EMM Consulting, Geo9, Endeavour Geophysics, BECA
  • Study participants contributed to providing confidence that for the proposed categories of wastes and with appropriate facility design, peration and closure, there will be no significant risks arising from the Proposal in terms of environmental safety
  • These supporting reports have contributed towards the Chandler EIS and feasibility studies
