Tellus signs kaolin market development agreement with AMR

  • Binding agreement signed with AMR Ltd, major Hong Kong based kaolin trading house
  • AMR to provide kaolin market development and distribution services focused on Asia
  • Opens up high value growing South East Asian ceramics markets for Tellus kaolin

Tellus Holdings Ltd (Tellus) is pleased to announce it has executed a binding market development agreement with Asia Material Resources Limited (AMR) which will pave the way for Tellus’ high grade kaolin clay to enter the attractive ceramics markets, with a focus on the growing South East Asian markets.

The initial market development works involves promoting Tellus kaolin products, achieving market technical and pricing acceptance, determining likely sales tonnage per year and securing sales agreements.

On satisfactory completion of these works, AMR will act as the ongoing Agent or Distributor for the kaolin products in South East Asia (Cambodia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, exceptions in Indonesia), South Asia (Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and India), East Asia (Taiwan and South Korea) and South Africa.

AMR, founded in 2008, is a venture between long- established ceramic and allied material trading and processing companies with collective experience covering industries such as tiles, tableware, sanitary ware and glass.

AMR has extensive coverage in East Asia and global distribution. It provides significant, specialist ceramic industry knowledge which is crucial in accessing the varied alternative kaolin markets.

Tellus is developing the Sandy Ridge Project in Western Australia and will be mining the mineral kaolin for ceramic, paint and other industrial markets.

The project has more than 25 years of kaolin and will feature a complementary storage facility.

“This unique sustainable dual revenue business model will support Tellus’ objective of becoming one of Asia’s most reliable and long-term suppliers of high quality kaolin throughout commodity cycles,” Tellus Managing Director Duncan van der Merwe said today.

In addition to being a significant trader of kaolin, AMR has its own kaolin project in Vietnam. Kaolin is a relatively varied product, with projects from around the world exhibiting different properties, such as plasticity, colour and texture.

“One of the significant benefits of working with AMR is the potential to develop a blended product, using Tellus Australian kaolin, AMR Vietnamese kaolin and potential additional sources and minerals to create a product of higher value than each of its constituent parts,” Mr van der Merwe said.

Before formalising the relationship with AMR, Tellus visited AMR facilities throughout Asia. The two companies have done significant product testing at independent laboratories as well as with end use customers.

Andrew Mountford, Director of AMR, said: “We are excited about our partnership with Tellus and look forward to playing a key role in bringing this new source of high grade kaolin to market.”

“Tellus is delighted to form this relationship with a recognised market leader such as AMR. We look forward to working with AMR to finalise our market entry strategy and become a long-term, reliable supplier to major kaolin customers throughout Asia,” Mr van der Merwe said.

Tellus buys local and hires local at Sandy Ridge

  • Tellus supports local and indigenous business by hiring locally and buying locally
  • Third round drilling to start second week of April 2016
  • Approximately 50 NQ holes to be drilled and six piezometers installed
  • Geotechnical investigations starts on road access, building materials and ground conditions

Tellus Holdings Ltd (Tellus) reports that the final phase of mineral and environmental drilling and first phase of geotechnical investigation on road access, building materials and ground conditions for the Sandy Ridge Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) will start in the second week of April with a number of local firms and experts providing services.

The Sandy Ridge project is 140 km north-west of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia (WA).

“Tellus has a policy of creating local business opportunities and hiring and buying locally. Even though field work at Sandy Ridge is relatively modest as we gear up towards the final approvals and build phase, it is great to see so many local firms providing excellent services,” Managing Director of Tellus, Mr Duncan van der Merwe said.

“This should increase as we get closer to production,” he said.

Local firm Wallis Drilling successfully provided previous drilling programs at Sandy Ridge and for this program of work will provide a Mantis 100 rig for drilling and sampling of up to 50 NQ aircore holes. The area to be drilled was identified in previous programs as a potential location for the kaolin mine and complementary storage and isolation services.

The drilling program will provide preliminary mine planning geological data for the Bankable Feasibility Study (BFS) and the first three to five years of operations.

Six holes will be drilled and equipped as piezometers to confirm the mine area does not have a water table. The rig will also drill a series of shallow holes to install soil moisture and temperature monitoring instruments. The data collected should confirm the calibration of the near-surface hydrogeological model for the site.

Douglas Partners’ Perth office has been contracted to provide geotechnical works that includes:

  • evaluating the existing pavement quality and borrow pit material suitability along 110 km of existing and new access roads;
  • providing pavement design services for new roads and on-site working surfaces;
  • evaluating infrastructure and village facility ground conditions, fill material quality and compaction design, and building foundation system design parameters;
  • mine pit slope angle validation, material density and waste cell cover building anchor design.
  • Data will be collected using in-field measurements and samples taken from trenches and drill-cores.

Other local and Indigenous business include:

  • the Indigenous company KyRok (onsite civil works and road clearing)
  • Aurora Environmental (soil moisture monitoring equipment)
  • Continental Resource Management (on-site geologists)
  • TerraSearch (logistical support)
  • several specialist firms will provide supplies.

Surveys commenced at Sandy Ridge

  • Next stage of on-site survey work for the proposed Sandy Ridge Facility commences
  • Tellus enlists the help of drone technology to drive efficiency, safety and lower cost
  • Permanent on-ground control network established

Post two rounds of successful drilling and a pilot project, Tellus Holdings Ltd (“Tellus”) has commenced the next stage of on-site survey work for the proposed Sandy Ridge Facility. The first step is the use of two Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (“UAV”) that will fly an area of 61 km2 and collect elevation data and digital aerial photography to be used in infrastructure site planning, surveying and the creation of accurate 3D maps used during the Bankable Feasibility Study, final engineering, build and operation phase.

“Tellus has enlisted the help of the two UAVs. This is innovative technology that improves safety, efficiency and lowers cost when scanning large areas and producing 3D maps. It is much faster than traditional methods and therefore can be done at a fraction of the original cost,” Managing Director of Tellus Mr Duncan van der Merwe said.

Ausurv will also establish a network of permanent ground control survey points and photo control points along both the site access roads and within the Sandy Ridge project area, using RTK or Static GPS.

The areas covered by the survey work include the Great Eastern Hwy intersection, Mt Walton Rd (100 km), site access road routes, mine and infrastructure areas and the pipeline and water supply.

Data collected by this survey work will be used in the project’s Bankable Feasibility Study and for subsequent detailed design engineering. The data also becomes an integral part of the baseline site topographic and photographic data set for ongoing site environmental monitoring during the build, operation and closure phase.

Kaolin:

South-East Asia is the crucial geographic focus for Tellus’ kaolin output as this is the most rapidly growing manufacturing hub for tableware ceramics due to its lower cost base and proximity to the largest markets in broader Asian region.

In Vietnam, a Tellus executive inspected kaolin mining operations and tableware manufacturers and visited independent testing agencies to discuss the positive results of test work conducted on Tellus kaolin. Tellus expects to be in a position shortly to announce the finalisation of a marketing agreement that will cover South-East Asia for its Sandy Ridge kaolin project in Western Australia.

Salt:

Indonesia represents an important potential market for Tellus’ industrial salt output given, with its large heavy industry customers and geographical proximity to Tellus’ export port of Darwin. Tellus executives met with potential commodity distribution partners and key Indonesian government officials. Tellus expects to be in a position shortly to announce the finalisation of salt distribution arrangements in Indonesia along with its first commodity offtake agreement.

Mine Equipment and Technology:

In October 2015 Tellus visited China and signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with China Coal and Technology Engineering Group (CCTEG). CCTEG is a large Chinese State-owned enterprise and dominant supplier of underground mining equipment in China as well as a proven equipment supplier in the international mining market. The MOU covered both the supply of mining equipment for Tellus’ projects as well as associated AUD 120 million equipment financing package for the purchase. During Tellus’ February trip to China, Tellus executives inspected some of the mining equipment assembly facilities of CCTEG and progressed technical and commercial parameters around the supply of equipment.

During Tellus’ February trip to Japan, a Tellus executive met with Japanese technology providers and have commenced formal commercial discussions. Japan has a toolbox of world’s best practice technologies that are relevant to Tellus’ projects.

Finance:

Tellus also met with key Chinese banking parties to progress discussions relating to senior debt project finance, in addition to CCTEG equipment finance that was discussed previously. Tellus is excited about the potential attractive funding packages that may be available to Tellus’ long term infrastructure business.

Next steps:

Tellus continues to believe that significant value can be created for shareholders from collaborating with key international commodity, technology and financial partners, especially those from the geographically important Asian region. As part of its forward scope of works, Tellus will continue to work with key parties to finalise and formalise arrangements as appropriate. On achievement of material milestones, separate news releases will be issued.
